This is a 1981 Charvel Star "San Dimas" – Pre-Serial, Pre-Production model with a custom "Spider-Man" graphic, owned by the late lead singer of 1970's hard rock group Montrose.
In 1975, a 22 year old Bob James from Torrance, CA tried out for the band after Sammy Hagar left the band. Some context here: keepinglovealive.org
The production number (#814) and a date (10-6-81) are written in ink/pencil on the body, underneath the neck. This is consistent with other models from this era, before Jackson bought the company and they officially started engraving/printing serial numbers.
For more information about these early Charvel prototypes:
Bob was my father, and I can attest that this guitar was in his possession for most of my life (I remember it being around as a child in the 80's), so it's possible he was the first and only owner too.
There are several dings and imperfections (as shown), but it plays great and I've had it professionally set up. I've also added cover plates on the back as it didn't have any over the springs or the electronics when I inherited it. Other than those two things I've not altered, customized or upgraded the guitar in any way. It's been in my sole possession and stored safely since Bob's passing in 2021.
I think this Charvel is a unique piece of rock history, and it's also a lot of fun to play. I'm hoping it will find a proper home with someone who loves and collects this style of guitar.
