ABOUT THE POSITION:
Monterey Fire Department serves the City of Monterey, City of Pacific Grove, City of Carmel-by-the-Sea and Sand City as the well as the Presidio of Monterey, Naval Postgraduate School, La Mesa Village and the Monterey Regional Airport. The department operates out of six stations strategically located to achieve the shortest response time to emergency calls. The Monterey Fire Department prides itself as being a customer service organization by providing excellent emergency services as well as additional public safety support through Fire Prevention, Public Education and Special Operations (Urban Search and Rescue, Marine Safety, and Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting).

The Fire Prevention Plans Examiner/Inspector is a non-sworn position in the Fire Department. The position will play a key role in the enforcement and interpretation of fire prevention laws, codes, ordinances and regulations. The successful candidate must possess strong organizational and customer service skills. The position may be required to respond to calls on evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Candidates who successfully complete all components of this recruitment process will be placed on an eligibility list. The eligibility list is active for 12-months and may be used to fill additional vacancies including lower-level positions determined to have similar duties and requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:

• The successful completion of a certificate program in Fire Technology or Fire Science from an accredited college or university. And the successful completion of California State Board of Fire Services accredited courses Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D, Fire Investigation 1A and 1B, and Plans Examiner 1A, 1B, and 1C or equivalent.
• Completion of an Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Technology, Fire Science or a closely related field and California State Board of Fire Services accredited Fire Inspector 2A, 2B, 2C and 2D and Public Education 1, or equivalent, are highly desirable.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in organized fire prevention including fire inspection, plan review and public education/relations.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
