How to apply Plasti Dip to rims
Preparation is key: Thoroughly clean the rims with car soap and water to remove all brake dust, dirt, and road grime. I have a special Dup Release specifically to remove the excess overspray on the tires peels right off easily.
You wipe the tires down with it. I got it from Fonzie at dip your ride... Make sure the surface is completely dry before moving on. You can use a leaf blower or a microfiber towel to ensure no moisture remains. For extra cleaning, wipe the surface with an alcohol and water solution.
Masking and protection: To prevent overspray, cover the brake calipers and rotors with a trash bag or masking film. You can also use playing cards or painter's tape tucked into the gap between the rim and the tire to create a clean line and protect the tires.
Warm the can: Heating the Plasti Dip cans in a bucket of warm water for a few minutes improves the spray consistency and helps prevent bubbles or air pockets.
Apply thin, even coats: Hold the can about 6 inches from the rim and apply a light "tack" coat first, aiming for about 50% coverage. After each coat, wait 5–15 minutes for it to dry.
Build up the layers: Apply 4–6 additional medium-to-heavy coats to achieve full, opaque coverage. Applying more coats creates a more durable finish and makes the Plasti Dip easier to peel off later.
Add a finish (optional): If you want a glossy finish instead of the standard matte, you can apply a clear Glossifier spray as a topcoat.
Final cure: Allow the Plasti Dip to dry completely for at least 4 hours before touching the surface. For maximum durability, let it cure for a full 24 hours before driving.
Important considerations
Durability: Plasti Dip is not as permanent or scratch-resistant as powder coating or a professional paint job. It may show some wear over time, especially from aggressive brake dust.
Maintenance: Cleaning Plasti Dipped rims requires using gentle, soap-based cleaners. Strong solvent-based cleaners can damage the coating.
Removal: Properly applied Plasti Dip will peel off in large sheets. If the coats were too thin, it may come off in small, difficult-to-remove flakes.
