We are seeking volunteers to support our homeless program Guests on an individual basis.
All of our homeless program Guests are currently working with a Case Manager to restore housing and income, and some of these Guests are interested in one-to-one meetings with an Advocate. Advocate volunteers do not fill therapeutic, religious or social work roles, but instead represent our Community's good will, natural respect and support for members currently facing tremendous challenges.
Our Advocates will be matched to a program Guest with whom to meet to provide some of the social contact and human connection often unavailable to those without housing. A typical Advocate meeting with a Guest would supply casual conversation, a listening ear, and a brief respite from challenging circumstances. These meetings would take place in public venues in the community and may include alternative activities (e.g., going for walks, attending a movie, having coffee, running errands). The respect and natural interest shown by Advocates can break the isolation that compounds the challenges homeless community members face as they strive to restore their housing and regular lives.
Weekly Commitment: Each Advocate meets with a Guest 2 hours per week.
Schedule: Advocate and Guest pairs work together to schedule their meetings.
Duration of Commitment: Meetings continue on a weekly basis for as long as both are interested.
Training Description: Volunteers will have orientation and training before assuming this role.
Volunteer Requirements: Must enjoy working with others in a supportive role. Must be 18 years of age or older.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer Advocate, please reply with a statement of interest and any information you wish us to consider regarding your participation in this volunteer opportunity.
