Caltrans' inspectors reported finding a number of cracked welds that will support the roadway...Also this week WSJ reported: Today (Monday,August 24) the New York State AFL-CIO President was named chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Surely the AFL-CIO doesn't represent the Chinese welders who are making the Bay Bridge but chances are the AFL-CIO is representing the Caltran's' inspectors. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal employees is part of the AFL-CIO. The federal government, with 1.7 million employees, is currently the nation's largest employer. If all of the predictated positions are filled by the end of 2012, the federal government will still be smaller than it was during Lyndon B. Johnson's presidency. These jobs won't be limited to the nation's capital, however almost 85% of federal jobs are outside of the D.C. area, and more than 44,000 government employees work abroad.

..WSJ's Norihiko Shirouzu and Patricia Jiayi Ho report: BEJING-General Motors Co. announced a new joint venture in China to make light-duty trucks as part of an effort to penetrate futher into China's vibrant auto market, a key strategic focus for the recently restructured car maker. GM announced Sunday (Auguat 30) the 50-50 joint venture with FAW Group Corp., a major Chinese state-owned auto maker. The two companies are making a combined investment of 2 billion yuan (293 million) for the new company, and will significantly expand FAW's exisiting light commercial truck business, GM said. The venture, based in the northeastern Chinese city of Changchun in Jilan province, has two existing assembly plants and is moving to add another, capable of producing 100,000 vehicles a year, by the end of 2010, said GM China President Kevin Wale. Mr. Wale said the new venture with FAW also would look at the possibility of exporting light commercial trucks "over time."

Today, nearly 90% of all home loans are funded or guaranteed by taxpayers - that has far reaching consequences for prospective home buyers and taxpayers. The government has the power to decide who is qualified for a loan and who is not. As a result, many borrowers are frozen out of the market. Nearly one-third of those who obtained home loans during the boom years of 2005 and 2006 couldn't get a home loan today. Many of these borrowers were never able to afford their homes. But many borrowers could and borrowers like them, are now running into tougher governmental standards. )

There were tens of thousands of people. Individuals wanting a free open capitalistic market in order to make a living. Individuals having a ball with their freedom of speech. Most of their signs showcased better wit than an usual David Letterman show. They're not into being repressed. Clearly they have no need for control freaks. Sure it look like an Elvis Presley concert but in reality it's a "reader revolution."...A strong argument can be made that the Democratic Party has an extensive history of being anti-libertarian. Slave power is as anti libertarian as you can get. Imagine what might have been if President Abraham Lincoln, immediately following the Civil War, had outlawed the Democratic Party. Credit the German people for outlawing the National Socialist German Worker's Party. )

AP's Leva Augstums reports: Nearly seven of 10 mortgage applications were approved and financed during the housing boom five years ago. At the end of 2008, the number was down to five. WSJ's Peter Eavis reports: More than half of U.S. residential mortgages are being made by just three large banks. It is a stunning change, but is it good for the housing market, and to what extent will it boost profits over the long term for this elite trio: Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and J.P. Morgan Chase ? The three originated 52% of mortgages in the first half, according to Inside Mortgage Finance, just over double these banks' market share in 2005. In servicing, their share is 49% compared with 22% in 2005. While big banks are originating lots of mortages, they are selling nearly all of them to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Right now, housing remains on government life support. Treasury-backed entities are guaranteeing about 85% of new mortgages, while the Fed buys 80% of the securities into which these taxpayer-backed mortgages are packaged.

...WSJ's Peter Eavis continues to report: What happens when the Federal Reserve stops buying hundreds of billions of dollars in financial assets? Even a gradual pullback could have big repercussions. Zero interest rates and Fed purchases- financed by "printing money" have played a massive role in reviving stocks and bonds and rekindling the economy. So far, the Fed's net buying of mortgage-backed securities totals $850 billion, or 80% of securities issued this year by entities like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Since these agencies bought nearly all new mortgages made this year, the central bank has effectively acquired most of the home loans made in the U.S.

..My read is that the Fed's printing presses have replaced the once-upon a time private investor purchasing power of mortgage backed securities. That sure has all the makings of yet another finger pointing cartoon. )

That authorization bill had also included a provision for the Matthew Shepard Act. What happened to an openly gay Matthew Shepard was despicable. He was robbed and then tortutred and left to die after being hit on by two fellows pretending to be gay. . However what had happened to Matthew Shepard had no link to the United States' armed forces.. ......Now that $680,000,000,000 is an awsome amount of money. How many Taliban " wife beating" militants are there? My discovery, via google, is that there are as many as 45,000 Taliban militants and as few as 11,0000 Taliban militants. How much of that 680 billion dollars then is stimulus defense spending ? Saturday night the Commander In Chief declared that he'll repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell. The Commander In Chief then declared that he'll sign a law that will force the military to enlist openly gay recruits. Now there's a bit of swagger change. What kind of society will be resulting from a 680 billion dollar defense budget and a Presidential demand for an openly gay military? Do you ever sense that President Obama is somehow an opening act for a modern day " politically correct " Ernst Rohm? ...I'm voting vote for Meg Whitman for Governor. I've read that she has on occasion treats her staff to lunch at Hooters. A merchant's life for me. )

( Saturday..Reuters: More than a million people streamed through the streets of Madrid to protest against a radical loosening of Spain's abortion laws on Saturday. One of the largest demonstrations snice anti-war rallies held in 2003 and 2004. The Madrid regional government estimated the crowd 1.2 million. She told a congressional panel that by the middle of next year, the impact of the stimulus will level off. Romer said spending so far has saved or created 600,000 to 1.5 million jobs but warned that unemployment will remain high, above 9.5%, through the end of 2010.......What Christina held back from adding was "and beyond." Still she was very frank about the stimulus and the near future. So the Democratic Party a.k.a. the Parking Meter Party spent 800,000,000 dollars in return for no more than 18 months of pause from a certain reality. )

Yesterday, Washington Post's Ellen Nakashima reports: House ethics investigations have been scrutinizing the activities of more than 30 lawmakers and several aids according to a confidential house committee report prepared in July. The report appears to inadvertently placed in a publicaly accessible computer newtwork, and it was provided to the Washington Post by a source not connected to the congressional investigations. The committee said Thursday night that a document was released by a lower-level staffer. The ethics committee is one of the most secretive panels in Congress. On Friday, Melanie Sloan, the executive director of the watchdog group Citizens for Responsiblitiy and Ethics in Washington said she was "pleasantly surprised" to learn that the ethics committee is scrutinizing so many lawmakers; but she cautioned it's only a start. )
