1984 Honda Goldwing Standard - $2995 (Corral De Tierra, CA)
70,000 original miles and still strong as ever.
If you can see this posting, it is still available.
The world's best "touring bike" was originally conceived, designed, built and sold by Honda as a Standard (or "naked") motorcycle from 1975-1984.
When a Wing is free of the bags, racks, fairings and other touring stuff it is quicker and hustles through corners much easier than big v-twins, thanks to the exceptionally low center of gravity provided by the flat-four boxer motor and under-the-seat fuel cell.
Its class-dominating success as a touring bike eventually overshadowed the Wing's street bike beginnings...and by 1985 you could only buy a fully dressed Wing.
The 1984 GL1200 Standard was the last naked Goldwing model built.
Goldwing experts say fewer than 5,000 1984 Standards were built...
Because no other 'Wing was built in smaller quantities, the 1984 GL1200 Standard is the most rare Goldwing and therefore the most collectible...if you're into that sort of thing. Other than perhaps a sulphur yellow 1976 Wing, an '84 1200 Standard is the Wing of choice.
Made in the USA , Standards tipped the scales at just 599 lbs...with 94 horsepower and 87 ft.lbs. of buttery smooth four cylinder shaft drive torque.
In other words for a heavy bike it is quick.
The GL1200 Standard is plenty large enough for two full-sized adults to cruise all day on the big, thick seat.
Hydraulic valves mean no adjustments. The carbs are in proper tune. The exhaust is original quiet and solid. I have the original seat which is in great shape but I now have a period correct seat with a built-in backrest on it installed. It also has a removable wind screen. I also have the chrome valve cover guards. I think it looks better without them. This bike can be reverted back to the nearly original configuration in about ten minutes for you purists. The original left side baterry cover is not original and was replaced some time ago probably off an Aspencade or similar.. Hard to find a bike of this vintage that is this clean. She is stripped down big iron and old school. No computer modules on this baby.
Tires are nearly new.
With Honda reliability, high performance, low cost of ownership... and the cachet that comes from owning a low volume bike... this motorcycle represents genuine big bike value.
