This Vintage Firkin Primitive Wooden Sugar Pantry Bucket is in good condition. The bucket has a wooden swing handle. Wooden button-like pegs keep the handle on the bucket and go thru into the inside of the firkin. This is overlap band construction with tiny nails and wire clips to hold the edge down. Warm patina coloring, probably made from pine. These round containers with the snug fitting lid, were used for storing dry staples (such as sugar or flour) in American Kitchens during the colonial days. Early ones have the wooden loop for a handle, while later ones have wire handles. This Firkin has a bentwood handle attached to the sides with two wooden pegs. It has an old brown finish, which shows wear commensurate with age and use. See Arene Burgess' book "19th Century Wooden Boxes", published by Schiffer Publishing Co, 1997 page 119 for a similar example.

Date: Early to mid 1800s
9.75 inches tall, 9 5/8 inch diameter lid, 10 inch diameter base
3 "bands" anchoring waist, name stamped on lid, but not clearly readable in entirety
lid top is split, with worn "chips" having splintered off of the top (underside of lid shows same split, but no cracks) Top of lid, where wood has splintered off, clearly shows the small flat nails used for joining edge to top.
Wide wooden handle, 1 3/16 wide, held by wooden pegs. The button ends of these pegs (exterior) on both sides have chipped edges, yet hold well.
Lid fits easily and snugly, in round with the base.
Sides of the bucket are worn but in good condition.
top band is loose, but held in place by wooden handle pegs.
Bottom 2 bands are tight fitting, in good condition. Bottom of pail is in good condition - no cracks or splits. The bottom edges of bucket sides show "groove" anchor holds.
Either side of bucket, where handle has rested, have slight grooves from the pressure and friction over time.
Beautiful color and drape.

If this is posted, it is still for sale.
