FIRKIN wooden sugar bucket - $95 (carmel valley)
Date: Early to mid 1800s
9.75 inches tall, 9 5/8 inch diameter lid, 10 inch diameter base
3 "bands" anchoring waist, name stamped on lid, but not clearly readable in entirety
lid top is split, with worn "chips" having splintered off of the top (underside of lid shows same split, but no cracks) Top of lid, where wood has splintered off, clearly shows the small flat nails used for joining edge to top.
Wide wooden handle, 1 3/16 wide, held by wooden pegs. The button ends of these pegs (exterior) on both sides have chipped edges, yet hold well.
Lid fits easily and snugly, in round with the base.
Sides of the bucket are worn but in good condition.
top band is loose, but held in place by wooden handle pegs.
Bottom 2 bands are tight fitting, in good condition. Bottom of pail is in good condition - no cracks or splits. The bottom edges of bucket sides show "groove" anchor holds.
Either side of bucket, where handle has rested, have slight grooves from the pressure and friction over time.
Beautiful color and drape.
