Dot-com minions, their sense of job security shaken, are boosting job site traffic, reports that career-related sites saw a 47.7 percent increase in the number of page views for January. IT-specific site dice.com had the fifth-highest traffic rate at 71.5 million page views. Monster.com's 615 million page views put it at the top, followed by HotJobs.com Headhunter.net, and craigslist.
"The cutbacks in Internet-related industries have created a large, available talent pool, one that knows how to find anything online, including jobs," says Marc Engel, lead analyst for Alexa Research. This talent pool accounts for Monster.com's 41.5 percent increase in traffic from December to January and vaults it onto the top 20 list of most-visited sites on the Web at number 13. HotJobs.com's 51.4 percent increase places it 57th on the top 100 list (see table).
The traffic boost apparently is too little, too late for 15th-ranked Jobs.com, however. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 15 and dismissed most of its workforce.
